Language ArtsFirst grade language arts presents a broad range of skills and expectations for reading and writing within the structure of the balanced Open Court system. Students work to master carefully sequenced concepts and skills where reading is taught in small groups so that the students work at a comfortable pace and have ample time for direct instruction. Virtually every sound-letter combination and a broad range of comprehension expectations bring the young reader-writer a whole set of learning tasks that excite and challenge the first grade student. Mathematics & Science & Social StudiesThe math, science, and social studies curriculum follow the Elementary Montessori method of learning along with the Sadlier-Oxford mathematics text. In math, each child is challenged through differentiated instruction with manipulative materials. An opportunity to reach beyond the core curriculum to achieve academic success is given to each student. Science Fair centers around the research of a favorite inventor, and the opportunity to role model their invention on Science Fair night. A week long immersion into the life and times of the Middle Ages culminates in a fun-filled feast and festival day that is shared with parents. The first graders bond with a senior Pooh Pal to enjoy learning combined with community service throughout the year. The connection time for the older and younger students is full of anticipation and excitement. SpecialsStudents begin their study of Spanish in Kindergarten. The use of computers for instruction, research, and communication is integrated with the teaching of all subjects. The Arts--theatrical, visual, and musical--are a key part of each student’s daily experience at Prep. Music echoes through the halls as students learn new instruments, rehearse for Grandparents’ Day, or practice for plays and recitals. Physical education and recess give students a physical way to express themselves on a daily basis. The school’s counselor and nurse alternate from week-to-week giving character development lessons and health instruction. The KNS library is open daily for student access. |
