Language Arts

Consolidating the broad set of skills learned in first grade in reading and writing are a large part of the second grade language arts curriculum. In addition to using the researched based Open Court reading system, students are exposed to quality literature that captures the imagination of students. Lessons incorporate comprehension skills and strategies, spelling, vocabulary, grammar, and the writing process. A strong phonics program uses both visual and auditory clues to help children decode words.

Mathematics

The second grade math program builds upon the basic operational skills introduced with Sadlier-Oxford texts learned in first grade and extends them. The emphasis is on place value concepts which set the stage for regrouping in addition and subtraction. Students apply these skills to solve story problems. Concepts are taught using a variety of activities which include manipulative learning aids, individualized learning centers, games, and traditional paper and pencil assignments.

Science & Social Studies

Second grade is filled with hands-on projects which make learning challenging. In the Fall, students learn about the life of the pioneers as they read Little House in the Big Woods as part of a cross-curricular unit. Students and parents enjoy culminating programs after studying pioneers and dinosaurs that exhibit research, writing, and presentations skills. Additionally, students study oceanography, and study the beach environment with a naturalist from the Coastal Discovery Museum of Hilton Head.

Specials

Students begin their study of Spanish in Kindergarten. The use of computers for instruction, research, and communication is integrated with the teaching of all subjects. The Arts--theatrical, visual, and musical--are a key part of each student’s daily experience at Prep. Music echoes through the halls as students learn new instruments, rehearse for Grandparents’ Day, or practice for plays and recitals. Physical education and recess give students a physical way to express themselves on a daily basis. The school’s counselor and nurse alternate from week-to-week giving character development lessons and health instruction. The KNS library is open daily for student access.
