Head Master Search Updates
Posted: Apr 30, 2008
March 24, 2008
Dear Prep Family,
The following is an update on our search for new head of school. As you may know, several weeks ago, a search committee was formed to undertake the important task of appointing a new head of school. This committee can only be as effective as the information it gathers to begin the search process. To that end, we have spent the last few weeks talking with faculty, parents, and trustees to attempt to gain a good understanding of the true “pulse” of the school along with priorities and dreams for the future. Thanks to those of you who have provided your input; it is your school and your perspective has been critical.
We begin our search by outlining a list of candidate qualities:
*Absolute integrity and a principled approach to leadership that includes high expectations and consistent treatment of all people,
*Substantial experience and a record of success in a demanding position of educational leadership,
*A forward-thinking leadership mindset and a strong confident presence,
* A dedication to superior academics,
*A demonstrated interest in and knowledge of best practices in education,
*A proven ability to delegate responsibility to faculty and staff,
*A genuine appreciation for and enjoyment of children and young adults,
*A consensus-oriented, team-building, and proactive approach to leadership, coupled with a strong ability to motivate children, faculty, parents and trustees,
*A personality that includes the attributes of patience, flexibility, approachability, good humor and a willingness to reach out to all constituencies,
*An ability to attract, hire and retain the best faculty.
We believe that in order to achieve the very best possible result for head of school candidates, the process should be conducted with serious purpose, specific order and professionalism. To this end, we have interviewed four highly acclaimed educational search firms, who in addition to substantial experience in this process, have as their strength their ability to provide us with only the best candidates who can bring a national perspective to Hilton Head Preparatory School. These search firms also seek out and recruit highly qualified candidates, at well established schools, who may not even be looking for another position, but who would be intrigued by the possibilities presented by a position like ours.
We have decided to retain the services of Educational Directions, Inc., an educational consulting firm who unanimously convinced our search committee that they were capable and best suited to find just the right person for the job. Dr. Jerry Larson, an associate consultant with EDI will be working with the search committee over the next several months assisting us in finding the best person to lead our school. Jerry will be on campus this week talking with faculty, staff, students, trustees, parents and the search committee so he can develop a clear picture of our school. His goals are:
1. To ascertain what are the perceived needs of the school and what experience/leadership styles/personality traits will best meet those needs.
2. To be as inclusive as possible regarding the process. He will be asking people’s opinions to develop a consensus from which to base our position description. A great part of this is the identification and articulation of the spirit/ethos/culture of the school.
Please welcome Jerry to our campus and our family.
We will be holding two parent forums for parents to meet with Jerry. The first one will be on March 25th at 2:30 PM in the KNS Center. The second one will be held on the 26th at 8:00 AM in the KNS Center. Anyone interested in attending can contact Pat Jackson or Sally Cardamone.
It should be noted that the announcement of the opening for Head of School at Hilton Head Preparatory School was received in the educational community with enthusiasm and serious interest. This is a great opportunity for the right person, and we intend to find the very best candidate for our school.
We will keep you informed as this process further ensues, and meanwhile, please do call us with any questions or concerns. We thank you in advance for your input and confidence.
Respectfully yours,
Don McKenna J.R. Richardson Helen Ryan
