Senior Speech Samples
We are off to a rousing, “set the bar high” start to this year’s series of Senior Speeches by members of the Class of 2017. Several seniors volunteered to “go first,” so our upper school student body has already enjoyed speeches from Sophie Rudloff (who spoke on empathy) and Ava Nixon (speaking on cell phone use). This coming week, spirit week, we will listen as both Dorsey Barker and John Horner deliver their senior speeches.
The senior speech is one of Prep’s graduation requirements. The concept of the speech was initiated back in 1997 in order to help students become more comfortable with public speaking and, as well, to be able to work closely with a faculty member as a speech advisor.
While speech content need not be controversial, it nevertheless should revolve around something each senior is truly, even passionately, interested in.
Each speech is judged by a panel of faculty members according to a rubric. After each speech, the panel meets to discuss the senior’s content and delivery. Grades awarded for each speech will appear in the seniors’ fourth quarter English class.
