Hilton Head Preparatory School to
Present Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast”
from February 19-23, 2020
Preparatory School’s new Artistic Director, Patti Maurer, is following up her
sold out smash first show “Fall Spectacular” with the iconic Disney production
“Beauty and the Beast” at Prep’s own Main Street Theatre February 19-23. Step into the enchanted world of Broadway's
modern classic, Disney's “Beauty and the Beast”, an international sensation
that played a remarkable 13-year run on Broadway and has been produced in 37
countries worldwide. Based on the Academy Award-winning animated feature, the
stage version includes all of the wonderful songs written by Alan Menken and
the late Howard Ashman, along with new songs by Mr. Menken and Tim Rice. Everyone
knows this story and people of all ages love it.
Just like her first show, Maurer
will be calling on her vast theatre experience and her industry connections to
produce what no one will call a typical high school theatre production. The production value of “Beauty and the Beast”
is in the magnificent costumes. Maurer
reached out to costume designer, Travis Halsey, in Chicago, who designs and
builds costumes of the highest quality. She is thrilled that her students will
have the opportunity to wear these Broadway quality costumes. The collection is filled with details beyond
what the audience will expect. You will have to see it to believe it. Maurer’s
connections have also produced a breathtaking set inspired by the Broadway show
with a two story West Wing! Again, not
your ordinary high school production.
Maurer has also invited actor,
voice artist and director David de Vries to Hilton Head Prep to teach a
specialized Master Class to the entire cast about working with the underscoring
of “Beauty and the Beast”. He plans to help these young actors understand the
musical template of the show as the subtext of their characters. He will spend
the day with the cast explaining his journey with “Beauty and the Beast” being
cast in the role of Lumiere in the Canadian production and several National
Tours of the show and both Broadway companies.
Mr. de Vries joined the Broadway
production of “Beauty and the Beast” in 1996 just as Hilton Head Prep alumna,
Meredith Inglesby ’93 (who played Babette) was leaving the show for the
Broadway production of “The Little Mermaid”.
Maurer has also invited Inglesby and her husband, Steve Blanchard (who
played the Beast), to work with the cast in February just prior to opening the
show. Inglesby credits her time at
Hilton Head Prep as an inspiration for her success. “I can truly say that I
would not be successful in this business without the education and programming
I received throughout my youth at Hilton Head Prep. It was a gift and invaluable training in both
character and professionalism.” Maybe there are some future Broadway stars
among this talented young cast of Prep students of all ages.
Performances are at the Hilton Head
Preparatory School Main Street Theatre Wednesday, February 19 through Saturday,
February 22 at 7:00pm and Saturday, February 22 and Sunday, February 23 at 2:00pm.
